Prior to the birth of OWCS, NRG had already been involved with competitive Overwatch as the San Fransisco Shock, having won 2 major championships in 2019 and 2020. However, with the dissolution of the Overwatch League, NRG made their way out of competitive Overwatch, and did not return for the first two stages of the new competitive system.

PGE, a rising DPS player, would form a team that dissolved shortly after, but he would soon find himself a new spot in YFP Gaming's team, alongside Infekted. The two however, found themselves benched frequently. Unsatisfied, they would go on to reach out to cal (who was previously on PGE's dissolved team) to form a new team. With only four hours, Students of the Game was born, with Rakattack on main support, and Scissors as their second DPS player.

On May 12, the NRG Twitter account would post a tweet asking fans what games they would like to see the NRG brand. Fans would storm to suggest Overwatch, dominating the poll with a 76% pick rate. Students of the Game had already qualified for Dreamhack Dallas, and were the only unsigned team, so to many fans it was an obvious choice.

On May 31st, as Students of the Game walk out for their match against SSG, they throw their caps into the air and take off their robes, revealing the jerseys used by the San Fransisco Shock in OWL. The Students of the Game were now the NRG Shock, retaining the original roster, with the addition of DPS player Wmaimone (who would later leave for ENCE).

If you couldn't tell by the dedicated page, the NRG Shock are my favorite team. I had already been a fan of Rak, cal, and PGE, and the the team had promising players, so I decided to support them right after their roster was announced. To not write any cringe shit, it's been fun following them and watching them succeed, and it slowly helped me interact with the OWCS community more. I wish the best for the current roster (and the many more to come!!) and I sure hope they don't implode... LOL....
